Tom Costello is a New York-based director and writer from Ithaca, NY.

He recently Associate Directed the Broadway revival of American Buffalo, directed by Neil Pepe and starring Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell and Darren Criss.

As a director:
He has been a Drama League Directing Fellow at the Hangar Theatre where he directed The Messenger by Olivia Dufault and Aesop’s Fables by Christopher Parks. He was an Associate Artist at the Flea Theater where he directed the world premieres of Smoke by Kim Davies and The Wundelsteipen (and other difficult roles for young people) by Nick Jones.

He is a member of the Fled Collective where he recently directed the workshop of Jacob Marx Rice’s The Tragical Historie of Maximilien Robespierre.

He is the Artistic Director of Alumni Productions at Atlantic Acting School where he has produced a number of shows, including John Early and Nicole Spiezio’s The Witchelor which he co-directed with John Early.

He was on staff for Pipeline Theatre Company for four years and administered its PlayLab, a residency for new work of unbridled imagination, where he directed a number of plays, readings and workshops.

He spent three years working with Dramatic Adventure Theatre, bringing artists to under-served communities in Ecuador and Slovakia to teach theater and devise plays about their experiences there.

As a writer:
He was selected for the New Victory’s LabWorks program in 2019 for development of a TYA musical with writer/composer Brendan Dalton.

His play Goodwin has been workshopped in Fresh Ground Pepper’s BRB Program and received a Forge Fuel Residency.


Tom is a graduate of the BFA program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and serves as a faculty member for the Atlantic Acting School’s NYU and Conservatory programs.

He also completed the APP Program at FAMU film school in Prague where he concentrated in Screenwriting.
